Manufacturer-Certified vs. Non-Certified Roofers:
What It Means for Your Warranty
Two roofers can install the exact same shingle on your house and leave you with very different warranties. One roof might be covered for materials only, for a limited time, with tear-off costs excluded. The other might carry decades of non-prorated coverage plus protection against installation mistakes. The difference often comes down to one question most homeowners never ask: is this roofer certified by the shingle manufacturer?
We've written before about warranties and lifespan for different roofing materials. This post takes the next step. Instead of comparing materials, it compares contractors, and shows how the roofer you choose decides which warranty you're even eligible for.
Why "Lifetime Warranty" Doesn't Tell You Much
Almost every major architectural shingle is sold with a "limited lifetime" warranty. That phrase sounds reassuring, but the word doing the work is "limited." The real value of a shingle warranty depends on details like:
- How long the coverage is non-prorated. Non-prorated means the manufacturer pays the full cost of covered repairs, not a shrinking percentage based on the roof's age.
- Whether labor and tear-off are included. Replacement shingles alone don't help much if you're paying full price to remove the old ones and install the new ones.
- Whether workmanship is covered. Manufacturer warranties normally cover product defects. Installation mistakes are a separate issue.
- Which components are covered. Underlayment, starter, ridge cap, and ventilation can be part of the system or left out.
Those details are where certification comes in.
What Does It Mean for a Roofer to Be Manufacturer-Certified?
Shingle manufacturers run contractor programs with different levels. To join, a roofing company has to meet the manufacturer's standards, which typically include proper licensing, insurance, and an installation track record. In return, the contractor gets access to extended warranty programs that non-certified installers can't offer.
RAM Roofing & Exteriors is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. That status requires Owens Corning to vet our licensing, insurance, and installation record. It also lets us offer warranty coverage that goes beyond the standard shingle warranty.
How Owens Corning Warranties Change Based on Who Installs Your Roof
Owens Corning publishes four warranty levels for single-family homes. All four are "limited lifetime," and all four include 15 years of blow-off coverage and, with qualifying hip and ridge shingles, 25 years of algae resistance. The differences are in who can offer them and what they cover.
System Protection Limited Warranty
- Who can offer it: Owens Corning Preferred or Platinum Contractors only.
- Non-prorated period: First 50 years.
- Tear-off and disposal: Included if required.
- Workmanship coverage: None.
- Key requirement: At least three qualifying Owens Corning components, including hip and ridge.
Preferred Protection Limited Warranty
- Who can offer it: Owens Corning Preferred or Platinum Contractors only.
- Non-prorated period: First 50 years.
- Tear-off and disposal: Included if required.
- Workmanship coverage: First 10 years.
- Key requirement: At least four qualifying Owens Corning components, including hip and ridge and underlayment.
As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, RAM Roofing & Exteriors is eligible to offer the System Protection and Preferred Protection warranties. The right fit depends on the shingle line and system you choose, and we spell out the warranty on your written estimate.
Warranty terms are set by the manufacturer and can change, so always ask for the actual warranty document for the coverage you're being offered.
The Big Difference: Workmanship Coverage
Most roof failures in the first several years aren't caused by defective shingles. They come from installation problems: wrong nailing patterns, poor flashing, missing drip edge, mismatched components, or bad ventilation details.
A standard manufacturer warranty doesn't cover those mistakes. If your installer goes out of business, you may have nobody to call. That's why a manufacturer-backed workmanship warranty matters. With the Preferred Protection warranty, the manufacturer stands behind installation workmanship for the first 10 years, not just the contractor.
On top of manufacturer coverage, RAM Roofing & Exteriors provides its own workmanship warranty on installation. You get two layers: the manufacturer on materials, and us on the work.
How a Non-Certified Install Can Put Your Warranty at Risk
Even the standard warranty has conditions. Shingles need to be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. On our roof replacement projects, we install architectural shingles to the manufacturer's nailing pattern because that's what keeps the wind warranty valid.
Common ways a warranty gets weakened or voided include:
- Improper nailing, such as high nails or the wrong number of nails per shingle
- Mixing brands of components when the warranty requires matched system parts
- Poor ventilation, which can shorten shingle life
- Layovers over existing roofs when the warranty or local code doesn't allow it
- Never registering the warranty after the job is done
That last one surprises a lot of people. An extended warranty isn't automatic. It has to be registered. On every replacement, we register the manufacturer warranty on your behalf and hand you the documentation at completion.
Does Certification Matter for Repairs and Insurance Claims?
It can. A repair done with incompatible materials or poor technique can create problems with your existing warranty. When we handle roof repairs, we install to manufacturer specification with matched materials, and if the repair carries a manufacturer warranty, we register it and hand you the documentation.
For storm damage, the same logic applies. If your insurance claim leads to a full replacement, that's the moment to make sure the new roof qualifies for the strongest warranty available. Our insurance restoration team documents damage with photos, meets with adjusters when you'd like us there, and helps the restoration scope reflect what your roof actually needs.
How to Vet a Roofer Beyond the Certification Badge
Certification is a great filter, but it's not the only one. Before you sign with any roofer, check these:
- Pennsylvania HIC registration. Roofing contractors in Pennsylvania must register as Home Improvement Contractors with the Attorney General's office. You can verify a registration online.
- Proof of insurance. Ask for a current certificate of insurance covering general liability and workers' compensation.
- The exact warranty name. Don't settle for "lifetime warranty." Ask which warranty will be registered, and get it in writing on the contract.
- The component list. Extended warranties require specific components. Make sure they're listed on the estimate.
- Who registers the warranty. Ask whether the contractor registers it and when you'll receive the paperwork.
- Workmanship warranty terms. Ask what the contractor's own warranty covers and for how long.
- A reasonable deposit. Pennsylvania law generally caps deposits at one-third of the contract price plus the cost of special-order materials.
- Real reviews. Look for a long track record, not just a handful of recent ratings.
